What is involved in a cleaning at the dentist?
- Photo documentation

- A general checkup
In Bali is not common to have your teeth checked by dental hygienist. normally our Bali dentist will do the treatment together with the general check up using mouth mirror in order to see your teeth condition and note which teeth need additional treatment like dental fillings, extraction, root canal treatment, porcelain crown, implant, veneers, or as simple as is it worth to continue ahead with teeth whitening treatment.
- Scaling or removing plaque, tartar, or stain
The mouth mirror will also guide our dentist scale your teeth with ultrasonic scaler or manual scaling instrument to get rid of plaque, tartar, or stain around your gum line, as well as in between your teeth. You’ll hear scraping especially will become louder in the back of your teeth, but this is normal. The more tartar there is in your mouth, the more time they’ll need to scrape a particular spot. Sometimes if the tartar is deep inside the gum, deep teeth cleaning procedure is needed to remove the tartar with additional anesthesia to ease the pain and sensitivity.
Brushing and flossing stops plaque from building up and hardening into tartar. Once you have tartar, it can only be removed by ultrasonic instrument at our dental office. So if this is your least favorite part of the teeth cleaning process, the lesson is to brush and floss more often.
- Gritty toothpaste polishing
After the scaling process is finish, our dentist will brushes your teeth with a high-powered electric hand piece that connected to a small tooth brush filled with toothpaste that smells and tastes like regular toothpaste, though you can often choose between flavors. However, it has a gritty consistency that gently scrubs your teeth. While it sounds scary, it’s a great way to get a deep clean and remove any tartar left behind from the scaler. If done by a professional, this polishing of the teeth is deemed safe to do twice a year. But don’t be as harsh with your teeth at home, because you’ll wear down the enamel.
- Expert flossing
Whether or not you floss regularly at home, there’s no substitute for a professional flossing session. Your dental hygienist can reach deep between your teeth, ensuring that even the most difficult-to-access areas are thoroughly cleaned. They can also identify potential problem areas where plaque buildup may be occurring or where your gums may be prone to bleeding, helping to catch early signs of gum disease before they become more serious.
While you might think that flossing at home is enough, having a professional floss your teeth provides additional benefits. It helps remove any lingering plaque, food particles, or even residual toothpaste that may have been left behind during the cleaning process. This extra level of care can contribute to healthier gums, reduce the risk of cavities, and promote fresher breath. Regular professional flossing, combined with daily at-home flossing, can significantly lower the chances of developing gum inflammation, periodontal disease, and other oral health issues.
